Nature-Based Child Centered Play Therapy: Taking the Playroom Outside

Our 10th chapter of Nature-based Play & Expressive Therapies is entitled Nature-Based Child Centered Play Therapy: Taking the Playroom Outside co-authored by Dr. Jacqueline Swank and Dr. Sang Min Shin. This chapter focuses on nature-based child-centered play therapy (NBCCPT), which is the combining of child-centered play therapy (CCPT) and the natural environment. The authors present current research that supports the benefits of time in nature and CCPT for children. You will find this chapter introduces you to the selection of a natural space and the development of the natural playroom containing a variety of materials from nature. There is also a discussion of considerations including confidentiality, limit setting, and safety. The authors include a case related to the use of NBCCPT with a child who is experiencing adjustment concerns.
Both Dr. Jacqueline Swank and Dr. Sang Min Shin share a passion for the integration of nature in play therapy and they have seen the power of this work first-hand. They hope that their chapter and this book will inspire child and family therapists to use nature in play therapy.
